Love In Silence
Headcanon #01
The Omatikaya don't believe in walls. They sleep in a pile, eat together, bathe in the same water — closeness isn't earned or performed, it's just the shape of being alive inside one tree. So when it comes to mated pairs, that closeness doesn't stop at the edge of a hammock. It just goes quiet.
Neytiri grows up learning this the way she learns to breathe. Quiet isn't restraint to her — it's devotion. The sound of a name half-spoken into a shoulder in the dark. Never a cry, never a word loud enough to wake a sleeping cousin. As a girl, she used to lie awake imagining what her own mating would sound like, and she already knew the answer: soft. Contained. A secret kept even from the person keeping it with her. This was love. This was how love sounded.
And then there's Jake.
Jake, who crashes into her world the way a stone crashes into a still pool. Loud in his footfalls, loud in his badly-timed questions, loud in that unbothered, open-mouthed laugh that goes up into the leaves and doesn't bother coming back down. She spends months certain he'll never learn quiet — eventually, if she's honest, she doesn't actually want him to. Somewhere in there, without meaning to, she falls in love with the volume of him. The way his grin finds her across a clearing and refuses to be small about it.
So the first time he comes to her, and he's quiet — careful, controlled, holding something back she doesn't yet have a name for — she takes it as a gift. He's meeting me in my own language, she thinks. She doesn't ask, not that night, why the one man who has never been quiet about anything in his life chose, of all nights, to be.
She finds out why later and it breaks her heart.
What I will say: there's a version of this story where the bond finally opens all the way, and so does he. Where all the noise he's spent his whole life not knowing how to hold in finally comes out with her name in it. Loud. Unguarded. Hers, and only ever hers, in a way her mother's hammock never taught her to expect.
She becomes addicted to it almost instantly.
