Jake Sully’s gun is a customised Recom M69-AR, also called the Skel M69-AR or Skei M69-AR. There is useful information online about the underlying rifle, although I could not find an official production commentary specifically explaining the meaning of Jake’s wooden stock and beadwork.
What is established
The standard M69-AR is an oversized RDA assault rifle intended for Recombinants and operators wearing the EXO-32 “Skel Suit.” Jake’s weapon is a captured example that has been extensively personalised.
Reported specifications include:
- Manufacturer: Freeborn Ballistics, an in-universe company.
- Ammunition: .50-calibre BAT, given as 12.7 × 76 mm.
- Real-world design influences: principally the Magpul Masada and Remington ACR, with elements resembling the Vltor Modstock, Thompson magazine channel and P90-style thumbhole foregrip.
- Jake’s configuration: magnified optic, backup iron sights and a secondary angled red-dot sight.
- Distinctive alteration: the military polymer buttstock has been replaced by an enormous, hand-fashioned wooden stock.
The Internet Movie Firearms Database’s Way of Water entry contains the most concentrated technical breakdown and identifies the weapon as a M69-AR. It also reproduces a Wētā Workshop rendering of the standard rifle for comparison.

The wooden stock
Jake’s replacement stock appears to be:
- Carved from a reddish Pandoran wood.
- Much longer and more vertically curved than the standard RDA stock.
- Formed with three large graduated openings, probably reducing its weight while retaining a strong outer frame.
- Wrapped along its edges and upper end with dark fibre or leather cord.
- Decorated with alternating pale and reddish beads.
- Finished with crossed bindings around the terminal section.
- Shaped so that the wooden frame encloses and interfaces with the rear of the metal receiver.

It is technically the buttstock, rather than the handle: the black pistol grip below the receiver remains the firearm’s principal handgrip.
The licensed Hot Toys figure provides some of the clearest all-round images of this component. It was marketed as a screen-accurate recreation and includes the customised rifle among Jake’s “iconic weapons”; photographs are collected in this Hot Toys figure overview and Sideshow’s official feature.

What the design seems intended to communicate
I have not found a statement from James Cameron, Ben Procter, Wētā Workshop or the prop department confirming its symbolism. Nevertheless, its visual purpose is unusually clear.
The gun combines:
RDA origin | Na’vi transformation |
Black machined receiver | Hand-carved wooden stock |
Military optics | Fibre and leather bindings |
Industrial mass production | Individually fashioned decoration |
Rigid angular forms | Curving, perforated organic silhouette |
Corporate weapon | Personal warrior’s possession |
It therefore embodies Jake’s particular duality: he continues to use human military knowledge and stolen RDA technology, but the weapon has been physically absorbed into his Na’vi life. It no longer looks like something issued by the RDA; it looks like something owned, repaired and decorated by an Omaticaya warrior.
The long curving stock also visually echoes the open, skeletal shapes used in Na’vi bows, harnesses and wooden tools. The three openings seem partly functional—removing a great deal of unnecessary mass—but their elegant graduated arrangement makes them decorative as well. The bead-and-cord wrapping transforms an industrial object in much the same way Jake’s tactical clothing is combined with woven armbands, necklaces and traditional materials.
What remains unknown is:
- Who made the stock within the story.
- What species of wood or fibre was used.
- Whether the beads carry a specific familial or ceremonial meaning.
- Whether Jake carved it himself, or whether Neytiri or another Omaticaya craftsperson contributed to it.
- Which individual concept artist designed this particular modification.
